Lew took several years of occasional work to make the fiddle. Bird's eye maple is very hard and was difficult to work. The front of the violin is a piece of a pine shelf board that happened to have very close grain which must have grown extremely slowly. The bass bar is carved into the top. The pegs, tail piece and button are all from a piece of Mexican Rosewood, while the fingerboard is traditional ebony. The back is of bird's eye maple. Much of the shaping of the fingerboard, back, top, and tailpiece was done by sanding. Purfling is made of a sandwich of walnut - maple - walnut. |
